Rick’s Mix Tapes

Back in the era of cassette tapes I loved making mix tapes for my friends. And then when cassettes became extinct I moved to making mix CDs. Well now we are in the are of streaming playlists. I hope you enjoy listening to them as much as I do.

Back in the mid-80s a new genre of music that brought together new wave, jazz, pop, and soul made some headway on the charts and I really loved it. We started calling it sophisti-pop and it was exemplified by artists like Sade, Everything But The Girl, and Swing Out Sister. Here’s some of what I loved.

Even though I may not keep up with all the latest music like I used to, I do keep my ears open to rhythms and melodies that speak to me. Here’s some fairly recent music that I really enjoy.

More music to get you on your feet. Tunes from when I was out with friends dancing in the clubs in the 90s. I wonder if Club Park Avenue in Tallahassee is still around, or the Hung Jury in DC.

I do like a good cover. Here’s a playlist of covers of some of my favorite music from the 80s (mostly). I call it “Cover Me Bad”.

Why did it take me so long to create The Eventual Cliche Disco Mix? Maybe I was afraid of it being, well, a “cliche.” But decades after disco came and went, we still hear these songs and they still make us smile and dance, if only in our heads.
